The Social History Collections Library is prominently positioned on the Iziko Social History Centre's ground floor, in what was previously the 1933 banking hall of the National Mutual Building.
The banking hall was identified as the most significant interior feature of the building, with its impressive domed skylight and ornately decorated ceiling - as was published the in the Heritage Impact Assessment Report by consultants Stephen Townsend and Ashley Lillie.
The library covers information on the history and people of southern Africa, with a focus on the Western Cape. A large collection of books and periodicals includes subjects such as popular culture, furniture, ceramics, textiles and other decorative arts, historical paintings, anthropology, historical archeaology and architecture.
The public may use the library for research, at no cost, although books and reference material may not be taken out of the library.
Research applications to study archival material relating to collections are regularly considered. Information regarding Iziko's social history museums are also available. It is necessary, however, to make advance arrangements with curators and collections managers.
